UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
