The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
