Recent Antimicrobials Celebrated as a 'Major Shift' in Addressing Antibiotic-Resistant Gonorrhea

The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in a generation are being hailed as a "major milestone" in the battle against increasingly resistant strains of the pathogen, according to scientists.

A Worldwide Challenge

Cases of gonorrhoea are on the rise worldwide, with data suggesting more than 82 million infections per year. Notably increased rates are reported in the African continent and countries within the WHO's designated area, which includes Mongolia and China to New Zealand. In England, cases have reached a all-time high, while rates across Europe in 2023 were three times higher compared to those in 2014.

“The authorization of new treatments for gonorrhoea is an important and timely step in the context of rising global incidence, the spread of superbugs and the very limited available drugs at this time.”

Health officials are particularly alarmed about the surge in treatment-resistant strains. The WHO has classified it as a "critical concern". A tracking program revealed that the effectiveness of key first-line drugs like ceftriaxone and cefixime increased dramatically between 2022 and 2024.

Recent Drugs Secure Approval

Zoliflodacin, marketed under the name a brand name, was authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration in mid-December for treating gonorrhoea. This disease can lead to serious health problems, including infertility. Researchers believe that specific application of this new drug will help delay the spread of drug resistance.

Another new antibiotic, developed by the drugmaker GSK, also received approval in close succession. This treatment, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was shown in trials to be successful in treating superbug versions of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Approach to Creation

Zoliflodacin was the result of a new, not-for-profit approach for medication research. The non-profit organisation GARDP partnered with the pharmaceutical company Innoviva to see it through.

“This approval marks a significant shift in the treatment of highly resistant gonorrhoea, which previously has been evolving faster than antibiotic development.”

Testing Outcomes and Worldwide Availability

Based on findings detailed in a major medical journal, zoliflodacin successfully treated over nine in ten of cases of the STI. This establishes an equal footing with the current standard treatment, which combines two antibiotics. The trial involved over 900 patients from multiple nations including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.

Under the terms of its unique model, the non-profit has the ability to register and commercialise the drug in many low-income and middle-income countries.

Clinicians treating patients have voiced optimism. The availability of a one-pill regimen like this is described as a "revolutionary step" for managing the epidemic. This is viewed as essential to alleviate the strain of the infection for individuals and to stop the proliferation of extremely resistant gonorrhoea around the world.
