Move Over, Rupert Murdoch: Is Lord Rothermere Poised to Be Britain's Most Powerful Media Mogul?

Biding two decades for a fresh opportunity to snaffle a prized business purchase is a luxury not afforded to many executives. The Rothermere family, however, adopts a more patient approach to timing.

Whereas most business boards draw up five-year plans, the family, having compiled a formidable media conglomerate over more than a century, are accustomed to planning in terms of generations.

A Much-Anticipated Bid

It was in the year 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the distinguished proprietor of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his attempt to purchase the Telegraph titles.

By Rothermere’s assessment, the failure delighted the media magnate because it would have established a stable of rightwing newspapers powerful enough to rival the “distinct political influence” of Murdoch’s own titles.

The reserved Rothermere, though, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The Telegraph titles were again put up for sale in 2023. From that point, two prospective owners have entered and exited, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their suitability. Rothermere has now made his move.

Dynastic Heritage

In the process, the 57-year-old has reinforced his family’s obsession with British newspapers, after his forebears bought, sold and smashed together some of the biggest titles of their day.

“He possesses business acumen, though not in a cutthroat manner,” said a media analyst. “It may sound sentimental, but his dedication to journalism is authentic.” I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”

Huge issues remain before the hereditary peer’s corporate entity can secure the titles. In addition to regulatory and diversity issues, Telegraph insiders are asking how he will stump up the £500m valuation. However, his aspirations of establishing a conservative media powerhouse have been rekindled.

Out of the Limelight

This constituted a audacious move for a proprietor who takes pride on remaining out of the public eye, often noting his willingness to let the pugnacious opinions of the Daily Mail differ from his own moderate, Europhile stance.

Journalistic Roots

A young Jonathan would be involved in discussions about the challenging launch for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He recalls the stress of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s Evening Standard, which he later sold.

He personally flirted with journalism, working as a editorial staffer on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before focusing on the commercial operations of his dynastic empire. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before company calls began, in effect commencing his chairing of DMGT, at thirty years old.

Business Direction

He has previously sold off lucrative segments of the business to refocus on the Mail and additional press holdings. The Telegraph bid is the latest sign of his eagerness to reaffirm the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” said a former DMGT executive. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”

His choice to take DMGT private in 2021 has also facilitated the acquisition attempt. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said soon after the move.

Editorial Independence

Intervening to change the Telegraph’s politics would be out of character. A former editor informed that neither Rothermere nor his father meddled in content.

“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he said. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”

He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”

Regulatory Scrutiny

With British politics seemingly sliding to the conservative side, there are inevitable political concerns about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a time when both have been increasing reporting of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.

Several progressive figures believe the Mail’s abrasive style has become more pronounced in recent times, pointing to its promotion of narratives advocated by Farage on immigration and the “woke” agenda. Others argue the Telegraph has undergone an even more radical shift, often running radical-right opinion pieces that exceed those of the Mail.

Financial Questions

There are numerous questions about how an individual even with Rothermere’s resources has the funds. Most media analysts believe that a more representative price tag for the titles is in the region of £350m, but Rothermere is prepared to pay a premium.

The company lacks a ready £500m, the price reportedly demanded by the existing owners as they seek to recoup the loan that secured ownership of the titles two years ago.

Long-Term Outlook

He has committed to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, viewing them as serving distinct readerships – broadsheet and mid-market. Nonetheless, there are concerns within both publications over reductions and the future strategy, considering the state of the newspaper industry.

Again, the dynasty has shown a readiness to take drastic action when necessary. In the past was trying to rescue an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he merged it with the Daily Sketch, brutally sacking numerous staff in the aftermath.

Regulatory Hurdles

The culture secretary has requested that the involved parties present the intended acquisition to the government within three weeks, but the remaining challenges will ensure the saga rumbles on well into the coming year.

“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” noted a former editor. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”

His eldest son, thirty-one, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being prepared to take control of the family empire, occupying a key position in DMGT’s media business. If his responsibilities will encompass oversight of the Telegraph is the next great chapter in the Rothermere media saga.
