Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have come together throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the morning session finished without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Talks
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Post-war management of the area

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
