Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people perished and more than 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
