The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
